Packaging is important to us because it protects the things we buy, it aids in the means of transportation, and provides a means of information or labelling.  The types of materials that are packaged vary depending on what is being packaged.

Food packaging is a necessity.  Take for example the potato in its various forms such as potato chips, french fries, scalloped potatoes, mashed potatoes and raw potatoes.  The type of packaging for each one differs and may even have multiple forms of packaging.  Some of these items need to be sealed from the exposure to air and to regulate the temperature. Others need to be labelled so that the consumer does not suffer from eating spoilt food and this depends on the shelf life of the item.  Lastly, the raw potato does not need as much packaging detail but needs to be carried from the supermarket to our kitchens.

Other items to consider are coffee, bread, and detergents.

Why study the environment?

Climate, weather patterns, flora, fauna, and esthetics can affect the environment we live in.  However, the major concern is the safety and security of natural disasters.  The quality of the air we breathe and the water we drink is also important to us.  The important question is, what do we do with our stuff?  Garbage, rubbish or trash as our stuff may be called when they no longer serve a purpose in our life.  What does it say about us?
